Life can get challenging sometimes.

When daily stressors begin to add up, it’s common for us to feel burnt out, stressed out, and just plain ole’ worn out.

Even though these feelings can be normal — when it begins to affect our productivity and our overall mood during the day is when it’s time for a mindset refresh.

Refreshing and improving your mindset can be the catalyst for productivity and a calm mind.

Here are seven things to do when you just need a break from reality.

1. Go For a Walk

I know this one may sound simple, but it can be very helpful.

Taking a break to immerse yourself in nature and move your body can help your mind feel refreshed. Not only that, but it can also be a fun activity for you to do alone (or with a friend) and give yourself some much-needed time away from the screen.

Sometimes we just need a simple break from the world. Going on a walk with your favorite podcast or playlist is a great way to get away from it all.

It can be as simple as a few laps around the neighborhood, on a treadmill, or wherever you please. Moving your body is a great way to hit reset — you’ll come back feeling renewed and energized.

2. Journal

Writing out how you’re feeling is a great way to transfer your thoughts from your brain to paper.

We’re letting out things we’ve potentially been holding hostage inside our heads. A lot of the time, we don’t realize we’re doing this. So, when we take the time to write about how we’re feeling, what’s on our minds, and what’s going on in our lives, it can relieve a bit of stress.

Or just take a few minutes to practice gratitude. Write out at least three things you’re grateful for every day. It’ll help you look for happiness in the simplicity of life. There truly is good in every day if you just look for it.

Make it an event — make your favorite beverage, get comfy, play soft music, and self-reflect.

3. Maintain a Healthy Diet

It not only makes us feel better physically but helps improve mood and energy.

I know – fast food and sweets can be so, so tasty. But if you’re feeding your body loads of fast food and sugar, it might be contributing to your sour mindset. It’s important to make sure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs to keep you up and going each day.

Sugary and overly processed foods can make you feel sluggish. While they’re okay in moderation, it’s important to prioritize healthy eating. (Whatever that looks like for you.)

4. Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Sleep

Sleep is essential to productivity and a healthy mindset.

When you’re running low on energy due to lack of sleep, you’ll probably have trouble focusing, low productivity, and sour moods.

A way to eliminate those negative impacts is by making sure you’re getting enough sleep each and every night.

5. Hydrate

Always make sure you’re hydrating.

It’s so important to make sure you’re drinking enough water each and every day to avoid dehydration. When you’re dehydrated, it’ll directly affect your energy, mood, and blood flow. You might experience physical symptoms such as dizziness and headaches.

To ensure you’re performing to the best of your abilities each day, make sure your water intake is a healthy amount each day.

6. Meditation

Take a few moments each day to solely focus on you and your body.

Following a guided meditation — whether it be through an app or a video — can help you center yourself and be completely present.

No phones. No computer screens. No social interaction.

Just pure relaxation, mindfulness, and meditation.

If you’ve tried meditation and it’s not your thing — just breathe. Take a few moments when you begin to feel overwhelmed during the day and just take a few, big deep breaths.

7. Don’t Overwork Yourself

Preventive care instead of reactive care is key here.

Schedule your time accordingly to avoid becoming overwhelmed and overworked.

At the very beginning or end of each week, sit down and plan out your week accordingly. Prioritize tasks that need to get done first. And make sure to add breaks into your schedule.

Scheduling your breaks and making time to take a second to yourself can help you in many, many ways. And on those breaks, you can complete one or two of these suggestions from this list!

Or you can just use it to take a few minutes to yourself. (Whatever that looks like for you.) Breaks are the easiest way to avoid burnout and overwhelm. This’ll help build a strong, refreshed mindset in the process.
